March - April 1998
A 30-strong team formed by The Scientific Exploration Society and including members of The Explorers Club, led by Colonel John Blashford-Snell and including archaeologists and international explorers, sailed, poled and hauled three traditional Aymara reed boats through lagoons, swamps and canyons on their journey southwards from Lake Titikaka to Lake Poopo. This proved that it was possible for the ancient people of South America to use the waterways for trading links. It also highlighted the need for further archaeological work in the Bolivian Altiplano.
